I’ve been there…. right where you are now.
And the truth is, I almost lost that fight completely.

My name is Rome Za, and I’m not the guy who was “supposed” to figure this out.

I’m not a genetic freak.
I’m not a world-champion.
I’ve weighed under 140 lbs my entire career…
and like a honey badger on a double espresso, I just wanted to go hard… All the time.

From the moment I touched Jiu Jitsu, I was obsessed.
I devoured every DVD, every tutorial, every book I could get my hands on.
Inspired by BJ Penn’s 3-year black belt, I put myself on the fast track…
completely unaware that I was also on the fast track to a wheelchair by age 21.

I competed in weight classes 20, 30, even 50 lbs above my own, and then I entered absolute divisions like a psychopath with nothing to lose.

And my body paid the price early.

Two herniated discs in my neck.
Two bulging discs in my lower back.
Both rotator cuffs, torn.
Almost a full tear in my ankle.
And chronic inflammation burning through my entire body.

I was held together by tape, braces, and a stupid amount of ego.

But the real breaking point came after an injury followed by a scan that changed everything.

The Doctor looked at me and said... “Get surgery… and find a new hobby.”

The moment he said that, it felt like almost passing out from a bow-and-arrow choke.

My world shrank.

Everything went dark.

Because Jiu Jitsu wasn’t just a hobby for me.

It was my therapy…
It was my brotherhood..
It was my identity..
My self worth…

Without it, I felt like a shell of a man.

I was heartbroken.

Disconnected from my essence.

And honestly I just felt lost.

Anxiety attacks hit me out of nowhere…
I would dry heave at the smallest of stressors…

Sleep became impossible - not even prescriptions could get me to fall asleep for more than 3 hours… I would lay away staring at the alarm clock in a cold sweat… 

And to escape the pain and internal chaos, I started smoking weed constantly just to numb myself enough to get through the day.

It was one of the lowest points of my life.

But after sitting in that darkness long enough…


something inside me woke up.

The wolf.
The fighter.

The part of me that refused to accept a life without the art that gave me purpose…

So instead of choosing surgery…
or quitting…

I chose a third option...

I spent almost the next two decades… and hundreds of thousands of dollars…

I Got To See What Most People Never See…

I trained at Marcelo Garcia's Academy in New York City with the GOAT himself. Seeing and feeling what “effortless” actually looks like when technique and structure are perfect.

I learned from Henry Akins, a Rickson Gracie black belt who mastered the art of Hidden Jiu Jitsu…learning the kind of invisible mechanics that make choking people feel like an art.

I got my black belt from Steve Maxwell. Who at 73 and one of the original American black belts has forgotten more about jiu jitsu than most people will ever learn.

I've rolled with world champions and ADCC medalists…

I've trained with movement masters like Cameron Shayne, the founder of Budokon yoga and movement.

I've spent time learning from legends like Rafael Lovato Jr., Baret Yoshida, Chewy and JT Torres.

And eventually - I even built Hero Academy in Costa Rica, the largest Jiu Jitsu nonprofit retreat center in the world.

But here’s the stuff that's usually missing…

None of those legends, none of those camps, none of those seminars… focused on teaching you how to make your body last.
